Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is a game that's made to continue the series from the main games, Sonic 1 through 3. It's set just after Sonic and Knuckles, with Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails setting off and going separate ways. Sonic decides to adventure around and have some fun. But Dr Eggman wants to take Sonic down still, and takes some of his best creations to try round two with Sonic. The game is a true sequel, but it really is a rehash in some ways. All the zones are based on zones from Sonic's past. It's different enough to say it's a new zone, but similar enough that you can pinpoint where it came from basically.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 puts Sonic where he belongs, in a 2D game. His latest 3D games really didn't hit too well with the fans, and rightfully so because they were really not good games at all. Sonic 4 was Sega's answer to fans that they would bring Sonic back to his true roots. And this game, although a rehash in several ways, is truly a fun game! You have 4 levels, each consisting of 3 zones, and a boss fight. The boss fights are really familiar if you've played the Genesis Sonic games like me, so it's nothing too out of the ordinary. But unlike those games, after so many hits Dr Eggman goes into a rage mode where he changes his strategy to kill you. It's definitely some spice to the fight, although still not massively difficult.
This I do see, but doesn't really bother me. It's different, but it doesn't really matter to me. The only real complaint I have about the game is that it's only Sonic. Which don't get me wrong, isn't really a major setback, but I've always loved having Tails alongside and having a friend play with me. That's something that needs to be in every Sonic game in my opinion. And not like in Sonic Colors, where you play as two Sonic's. But as Sonic and Tails. Knuckles needs to be in the game too, because he is one of the original awesome characters. This is only Episode 1 that's out, so there could be Knuckles and Tails in the next game! And Sonic may be improved too, and that's a good thing too although I didn't have much of an issue there. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is definitely a step in the right direction for the series and I'm hoping it continues to go that way.
